The November birthstone of Topaz is a smei-precious gemstone that holds a hardness level score of 8.0 on the Moh’s scale. Most topazes are naturally yellow or brown, and this is the classic November birthstone colour. Heating the browner stones turn them reddish-pink and the yellower stones turn clear. Prized for several thousand years in antiquity, all yellow gems in antiquity were called topaz. The most prized color of topaz is called Imperial topaz after the Russian Tzars of the 1800s and features a magnificent orange body color with pinkish undertones.
The Gregorian calendar has poems matching each month with its birthstone. These are traditionally the stones in English-speaking societies. It is not known whether this verse originally is of the Gregorian calendar or not. In fact Tiffany & Co. published these poems “of unknown author” for the first time in a pamphlet in 1870. Below is part of the poem that relates to November.
Who first comes to this world below
In dreary November’s fog and snow,
Should prize the topaz amber hue,
Emblem of friends and lovers true.
